Hanwha Ocean has successfully delivered its 200th LNG carrier, becoming the world’s first shipbuilder to reach this milestone. This achievement reinforces Hanwha Ocean’s position as a global leader in LNG carrier construction. The Lebrethah is an eco-friendly vessel that utilizes a low-pressure dual-fuel propulsion engine (ME-GA), a reliquefaction system, and Hanwha Ocean’s smart ship solution, HS4, to significantly reduce emissions of air pollutants.

As of February 2025, Hanwha Ocean received the most orders for LNG carriers worldwide, capturing around a quarter (23.4%) of market share and securing a top position in the industry.1 Hanwha Ocean has also optimized production efficiency by establishing an infrastructure capable of simultaneously constructing four vessels in a single dock, achieving annual maximum production capacity of 25 LNG carriers — the highest in history. The rise in demand for LNG carriers is reflected in projections by Clarksons Securities, a global shipbuilding and maritime investment firm, which estimates that new LNG carrier orders could reach up to 126 vessels by 2029, representing a market value of approximately $35 billion USD.

“As LNG plays an increasingly vital role in the global energy market, we are confident that Hanwha Ocean, backed by our technological prowess, is the ideal shipyard to meet the evolving demands of global shipowners,” said Jong Seo Kim, COO and head of the commercial vessel business at Hanwha Ocean.

To meet rising global demand for LNG and clean energy vessels, Hanwha Ocean has continuously advanced fuel efficiency technologies, including the world’s first partial reliquefaction system (PRS) and full reliquefaction system (FRS) for both high-pressure and low-pressure engines. Additionally, the company is actively developing low and zero-carbon solutions.

Hanwha Ocean’s expertise in LNG-related technology is recognized globally, with achievements including the development of the world’s first icebreaking LNG carriers, LNG regasification vessels (LNG RVs), floating storage and regasification units (LNG FSRUs), and floating production, storage, and offloading (LNG FPSO) units. Along with these world-first innovations, the company’s comprehensive lineup of LNG-related facilities includes LNG carriers and floating storage units (LNG FSUs).

The company is expected to play an increasingly important role as Hanwha Group continues to build out its LNG value chain, which will encompass LNG production, storage, transportation, and power generation.
